Who we are

The Austrian Forum for Literary Translation (Forum Literaturübersetzen Österreich) promotes all aspects of literary (and scholarly) translation, in particular the public visibility of literary translation, the public interest in it, and the conditions under which it is performed.

We offer information and advice on all issues relevant to literary translation and to current conditions and developments in this field. We also organise advanced training and educational events – most notably the annual Austrian Translators’ Seminar – and we bring the work of literary translators to wider attention by presenting it to the public.

Our office is based at in the Literaturhaus Vienna. Together with the Association of Authors and the Documentation Centre for Modern Austrian Literature, we have been based here since its foundation in 1991. We also maintain national and international networks in the realms of translation and cultural policy.

The association, originally known as “Übersetzergemeinschaft”, was established in 1981 under the leadership of the long-serving president Utta Roy-Seifert. At the turn of the millennium, Werner Richter took over the chair.
